Grants are designed for senior scholars who need to make brief visits to Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia in connection with ongoing research, and who do not require academic or administrative assistancein carrying out their proposed projects. Awards will provide an APEX round-trip air fare and a lump sum support allowance. Maximum period of stay is two weeks (participants may stay longer at their own expense). Research in the region of Mongolia is not supported under this program. Applications must be received on or before deadlines cited.

Program: NIJ Young Scholars Fellowship Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Justice
Next Deadline: JUN, 1995

Supports short-term research by graduate students andlaw students on issues that relate to policy and practice in the criminal justice field. Fellows will spend 10 weeks at NIJ. Stipends of $5,000 are awarded through the university. In 1994-95, NIJ supported one fellow in each of the following areas: drugs; prosecution; corrections; and violence. FY 95 competition TBA spring1995 with 60 day deadline.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Methods to Replace or Reduce Use of Animals in Research
Agency: National Center for Research Resources
Next Deadline: JUN 01, 1995

Supports research methods that do not use vertebrate animals, use fewer animals, or produce less pain and distress in vertebrate animals used in research. Of interest are studies using invertebrates, microorganisms, cell and tissue culture systems, or mathematical approaches. Studies may focus on biological models or model systems derived from, or consisting of, non mammalian organisms or non invasive experimental techniques for use with animals. Support will be provided for up to five years.

Program: Medical Rehabilitation Research
Agency: National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
Next Deadline: JUN 01, 1995

Supports basic, clinical and applied research on restoring, replacing or enhancing the function of children and adults with disabilities, including research on functional problems associated with diminished mobility; body systems response to lost function; adaptive behavior systems modifications to functional loss; treatment intervention effectiveness in restoring function; assistive devices; and outcome measurement systems.

Science/Engineering

Program: Space Physics Theory Program
Agency: National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Next Deadline: JUN, 1995

Supports theoretical research in basic physical plasma processes and system dynamics that occur in the solar system and are important in influencing solar terrestrial relations. Also supports research on basic physical processes affecting space craft operations, such as turbulence. Program provides three-year awards to specialized centers. NASA anticipates that required letters of intent will be due in late June with final proposals due by late August 1995.

Program: Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Jupiter Data Analysis and Interpretation Program
Agency: National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Next Deadline: APR 24, 1995

Supports follow-up studies of the July 1994 collision of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter. Proposals may focus on the analysis and interpretation of data, modeling, or theoretical studies. Areas of interest include chemical, physical and thermal structures of the Jovian atmosphere and of the impacting bodies; atmospheric entry science; and the interaction of the Jovian magnetosphere with cometary dust and grains. NASA and the National Science Foundation will jointly provide $2 million for this program in FY 1995.
