Pitre won the Ciba-Geigy Award in Entomology for almost 30 years of service to agriculture at the Southeastern Meeting of the Entomological Society of America.
His research on insects affecting soybeans, corn, sorghum, cotton, and alfalfa has saved farmers money while reducing environmental contamination from the use of insecticides. He also has worked on international programs to improve agriculture in the developing countries of Africa and Latin America.
Pitre joined the entomology faculty in 1965. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, his master's from Louisiana State University and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin.
