Faculty pianist will perform Debussy 'Preludes'

A Mississippi State faculty member performs the complete set of Claude Debussy's "Preludes" for solo piano in a recital April 27 on the university campus.

Dr. Duncan MacMillan of the Music Education Department performs at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre of McComas Hall. There is no charge.

Debussy's "Preludes," completed in 1913, were modeled after similar sets by Bach and Chopin. The 24 short pieces are among Debussy's most admired works and exemplify the French Impressionism movement in music.

The set is rarely heard in its entirety. It includes several well known pieces such as "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair," "Minstrels," "The Sunken Cathedral" and "Fireworks."

MacMillan joined the Mississippi State piano faculty in 1993. He has performed in collegiate and civic artists series throughout the Southeast and the West, and at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

In 1993, he was invited to present a series of four lectures at the University of Oklahoma on the music of the late Michael Hennagin. Since then he has been asked to edit Hennagin's music manuscripts for publication and to serve as chairman of the board of directors of the Michael Hennagin Foundation for Contemporary Music.
