

Dawn S. Luthe, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, was one of 25 participants in the Agricultural Bioethics Institute sponsored by Iowa State University and held at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) in May. Participants are encouraged to introduce discussions on ethical issues to their classes. Some of the topics included were "The Moral Status of Animals," "Population Issues and Duties to Future Generations," "The Value of Life," "Justice and Genetic Intervention," "International Justice and Obligations of Rich Counties to Poor," "What is the Place of Humans in Nature," and "Political Philosophy and the Environment."
The Faculty and Professional Women's Association recently awarded two scholarships for 1995-96. Sue Anne Ellison of Eupora received a $300 undergraduate scholarship and Deborah Bronson of Russellville, Ala., was awarded a $300 graduate scholarship. Ellison is a sophomore elementary education major and Bronson is studying for her doctorate in sociology.
Five Mississippi State aerospace engineering students recently took first-place honors in aircraft design competition at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics' regional conference in Atlanta. Team members were Timothy M. Clements of Reading, Pa., Toxie H. Givens III of Brandon, Tracy D. Hammonds of Huntsville, Ala., David L. Page of Clinton, and Michael B. Reeves of Monroe, La. The graduate students' design of a solar-powered motor glider won first place in competition with five other design teams. The plane may be viewed on the Internet's World Wide Web: http://www.ae.msstate.edu/~aiaa/. The students are members of the AIAA August Raspet Student Branch, with Kenneth R. Hall and Thomas Hannigan serving as faculty advisers.
Nancy Verhoek-Miller, professor of curriculum and instruction, recently conducted a writing seminar for children's literature authors at the first Eudora Welty Film and Fiction Festival in Jackson. The event was co-sponsored by the Mississippi Writers Association and the Mississippi Film Office.
The Mississippi State Women's Club presented a $500 scholarship to Betty Inez Newton of Pickens, S.C. She is pursuing her doctorate in agricultural and biological engineering.
Robert E. Wolverton, head of foreign languages, will be included in the Golden Anniversary 50th Edition of "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities." This will be the 25th consecutive year that Wolverton is included in the publication.
John F. Marszalek participated in a recent panel discussion in Corinth on "Shiloh: Critical Campaign for the West." The seminar was sponsored by the Civil War Education Association and the American Blue & Gray Association. Marszalek addressed "William T. Sherman at Shiloh."
Edward Martin, professor emeritus of landscape architecture, assisted in Louisiana State University's Landscape School of the South for 1995.
