Staff council surveys classification, compensation system

According to a survey conducted by the Professional and Support Staff Advisory Council, no clear mandate of the university's professional and support staff support a redesign of the classification system.

Tabulations showed 59.3 percent of the respondents were in favor of a redesign, according to members of the council's Compensation Committee. After reviewing all the data, the committee reported that the university's problems lie in compensation, not classification. It recommended no redesign of the current classification system, and the council concurred.

Questions and response percentages are as follows:

Does your title accurately reflect your job duties?

Is your title or classification important to you? Is your compensation comparable to that of other employees with similar titles and duties? Should raises be based on job performance? Are you in favor of redesigning the classification/compensation system? If yes, should this be done by:

A university task force, containing representatives from the professional/support staff and Human Resources Management, 44 percent.

An independent consulting firm in consultation with professional/support staff and Human Resources Management, 51 percent.

Some other method, 5 percent.

Should new employees be hired at current market rates, even if that rate is higher than that of an existing employee with the same job?

Demographics:

Do you currently hold a: Do you work within: How many years have you been employed with Mississippi State? How many years have you held your current position? Excluding jobs held while enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate student, have you had more than one job at MSU? What is your gender? The response rate for this survey, the first one ever conducted by the council, was 31 percent.
