University to add more channels, fiber optics in residence halls

A new contract between the university and Northland Cable calls for more university channels, various cable television options and future computer network connections in its residence halls.

The 10-year contract, which began July 1, will allow all residence hall students access to every channel offered by Northland Cable. At present, the halls are receiving 36 of some 40-plus channels. In addition, the cable company is working to provide exclusive pay-per-view options for students.

"The contract also calls for two additional Mississippi State channels in 1996 and two more by the year 2000," explained Tom Pilgreen, associate director of housing. "With five channels at our disposal [the university currently has one], we will have the option of broadcasting classes."

Pilgreen said Critz Hall will soon be the pilot residence hall for Phase I of a fiber optic project. Northland Cable is working with the housing office and the Computing Center to help with installing fiber optics, providing Internet connections in each residence hall room.

"Critz will be our test case to see how receptive students are to it," Pilgreen said. "We hope to wire every residence hall for the Internet if funds are available."

Besides individual rooms in Critz, the cable company will install fiber optics in Hathorn, Hamlin, Hightower, and Rice computer labs, allowing faster connections and World Wide Web access.

"We're excited about the possibilities ahead," Pilgreen said.
