

Provides assistance to scholars planning to write an article-length manuscript of publishable quality and report their findings in scholarly publications with a view to enhancing the status of Canadian Studies in the U.S. Eligible areas are the social sciences, business, journalism, environment, humanities, law, and fine arts with a unique relevance to Canada. Applicants may request between US$1,000 and US$7,500 to help defray direct costs such as travel, books, secretarial services, etc. Release time stipends and indirect costs are not allowable.

Four types of residential fellowships support research at the Center on the history, theory, and criticism of art, architecture, and urbanism. Senior Fellowships are for one academic year (deadline October 1); Visiting Senior Fellowships are for up to 60 days (deadlines March 21 and September 21); Senior Associate appointments offer use of the Center's facilities for those with other financial support; and Predoctoral Fellowships support doctoral dissertation research (November 15 deadline for the latter two programs).
Program: Folger Institute Grants-In-Aid and Fellowships

Limited number of stipends are awarded to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars attending seminars sponsored by the Folger Institute Center for Shakespeare Studies or by the Center for the History of British Political Thought. Also, in collaboration with the American Society for 18th Century Studies, the Folger Institute awards one fellowship of $2,000 per month for up to three months to a postdoctoral scholar who is a seminar participant.
Awards are made to non-profit organizations, including colleges and universities, for projects that meet the most pressing needs of youth, as related to science education, environmental education and job training. Emphasis is on broad, innovative and forward-thinking projects with national scope that are dedicated to improving the human condition. Grants during the past year ranged from $10,000 to $100,000.
Program: Competitive Research Program
Agency: Dairy Management, Inc.

Supports research that leads to the development of new dairy products, processes and packages; the identification of novel product positioning or promotion opportunities; and the resolution of problems that influence product quality or the perception consumers have about dairy products. Deadlines cited are for required letter of intent. DMI is the result of the merger of the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board and the United Dairy Industry Association, which included the National Dairy Council.
Provides opportunities for training in research to characterize the human genome and the genomes of selected model organisms. Institutional predoctoral research training provides interdisciplinary training for a wide variety of individuals. Stipend for predoctoral trainees is $8,800 per year. Individual and Senior Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to molecular biologists; physical, chemical, mathematical and computer scientists; engineers; and humanists for training in genomic research or the ethical and social implications of such research.
Program: Minority Dissertation Research Grants
Agency: National Institute of Mental Health

Program is designed to encourage minority doctoral candidates to pursue research careers in any area relevant to mental health or mental disorders. Areas of interest include: molecular and cellular neuroscience; stress and post-traumatic stress; neurobiology; neural, behavioral, psychological, and sociocultural development; psychopharmacology; behavioral medicine; neuroimmunology; and AIDS. See the April 8, 1994 NIH Guide for more details.
Supports estuarine management related research that enhances scientific understanding and public awareness of reserve environments. Priorities include: water management; sediment management; nutrients and chemical inputs; coupling of primary and secondary productivity; and estuarine fishery habitat requirements. Deadline cited is for required preliminary proposals. Final proposals are due November 1, 1995.

Through agreements with many federal agencies, opportunities are available for recent Ph.D.s and senior investigators to engage in basic and applied research at over 100 federal labs and research facilities. Stipends will support research in: chemistry; earth and atmospheric sciences; engineering and applied sciences; biological, health and behavioral sciences; neuroscience; biotechnology; math; space and planetary sciences; and physics. Catalog describes interest of each facility and applicable deadlines.
