Veteran financial officer to head business affairs

A veteran financial officer and internal auditor at Mississippi State has been named vice president for business affairs, pending approval in July by the Board of Trustees, state Institutions of Higher Learning.

Leah T. Norman, a member of the university's staff since 1985, will become the permanent chief financial officer and the first woman to serve as a vice president at Mississippi State. She has been acting vice president since October.

The appointment follows the unanimous recommendation of a search committee made up of university faculty, staff and administrators.

As vice president for business affairs, Norman will be responsible for a wide range of university activities, including budgeting, fiscal planning, purchasing, human resources, physical plant operations, and auxiliary enterprises.

During her nine-month tenure as acting vice president, the university's budgeting system has been restructured, installation of a new administrative computing system has been largely accomplished, and a plan has been implemented to increase the university's financial reserves.

"Ms. Norman has the experience and professional expertise that we need to continue strengthening our financial operations," said President Donald Zacharias. "She is known for her integrity and has the management skills we need at a time of high public expectations for productivity and accountability on university campuses. She also has the ability to build consensus when resolving major financial issues."

Norman joined the university as director of internal audit in 1985 and took on added responsibility for budget planning in 1993. From 1974 to 1985, she held a series of positions in the state Department of Audit, where she was responsible for state audits in North Mississippi of universities and community colleges, including Mississippi State.

She is a 1972 Mississippi State graduate with a degree in accounting. She is active in a variety of professional, civic and service organizations.
