Mississippi State gets Windows 95 donation from Microsoft

The Microsoft Corp. is donating its new Windows 95 computer operating system to the College of Business and Industry.

The just-released software, valued at nearly $19,000, will be used in business information systems classes on the management of computer information systems. Also donated are the Microsoft office professional suite of programs and the visual basic programming system.

Charles R. Litecky, a professor of business information systems, said the new software will enable "students to become better prepared for assisting Mississippi corporations with their computer and information systems needs."

Other donated software, such as Powerpoint, Microsoft's presentation software, will be used in a newly redesigned master of business administration program, he added. Specifically, it will be used in a course on multimedia presentation and communication.

"In this course, students will polish their personal presentation skills and master the technology of using multimedia to dramatize their presentations," Litecky said.

The use license granted Mississippi State by the Redmond, Wash.-based software manufacturing giant also provides for system upgrades for two years.

Microsoft is making similar donations to other schools throughout the country as part of its Instructional Lab Grants program.

Joining Litecky in the Mississippi State grant proposal were business information systems faculty colleagues Kirk Arnett, Steve Canfield, Rodney Pearson, and J.P. Shim.
