Faculty senate refuses to consider resolution for censure

At the first meeting of the school year, the Holland Faculty Senate voted by secret ballot in closed session by a large majority to reject consideration of a resolution censuring President Donald Zacharias.

Senators voted almost two-to-one at the Sept. 8 meeting not to refer the proposed resolution to a commitee, effectively killing it. The vote was 29-15, with no abstentions.

The issue came to the Senate in an Aug. 31 letter from faculty members Thomas H. Fisher of Chemistry, Sonny Ramaswamy of Entomology and Clyde V. Williams of English, who objected to the process that led to selecting the vice president for business affairs in July.

The meeting began with a briefing by Zacharias, who noted that "I am firmly committed to having broad representation on all major search committees. I have followed that principle and I want to work with you to make sure we avoid misunderstandings in the future."

Also at the meeting, Zacharias announced that higher education Commissioner Thomas Layzell has established a system-level planning committee under the direction of Dr. Milton Baxter of the Institutions of Higher Learning board staff. Zacharias said the inaugural committee meeting held earlier that day in Jackson focused primarily on the 15 percent funding increase universities will be seeking from the 1996 Legislature. Senate chair Dan Embree said that Senator Gary Myers of English is heading an ad hoc committee to serve as a liaison between the senate and College Board members and staff. The committee plans to invite IHL officials to spend a day on campus to get a better appreciation of "some of the emphases we think are important." Research, travel and graduate instruction were three areas he specifically mentioned.
