Very Special Arts program plans October festival; seeks volunteers

The 17th annual Golden Triangle Very Special Arts Festival will be held Oct. 11 at Mississippi State.

The public program will take place 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in Humphrey Coliseum.

Disabled children, youths and adults with disabilities from an eight-county area will celebrate their accomplishments with parents, teachers, other students, and hundreds of volunteers. Counties represented include Chickasaw, Choctaw, Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Webster, and Winston.

The festival is sponsored by Very Special Arts Mississippi. A volunteer non-profit organization, VSA-MS uses the arts as tools for teaching persons of all ages with physical and mental disabilities.

"The festival will feature a variety of hands-on activities, including painting, sculpting, dancing, music, and much more," said Jorja P. Turnipseed, the retired Mississippi State music education professor who founded Very Special Arts Mississippi.

Turnipseed said more than 500 volunteers are required annually to assist with various festival components, including traffic direction and sign making.

"We also need artists, craftsmen, square dancers, cloggers, and others who can share their knowledge and skills with the participants," she said.

Turnipseed said individuals or groups interested in volunteering should contact new program coordinator Marilyn Waldham at 325-2367.

In addition to volunteers, local festival support is provided by Mississippi State, United Way of North Central Mississippi, United Way of Clay County, Mississippi Arts Commission, and individual donors.

Registration forms for festival participants also can be obtained by telephoning Waldham at the above number.
