The newly expanded U.S. Mail Committee is asking both the University Mail Services and the U.S. Postal Service for additional information about workings of the campus post office.
For the past three months, Mississippi State officials have been in discussions with the USPS about possibly assuming management of the office. Requests for a dialogue originated with the Postal Service in July.
Mail Services, which is housed in the basement of the Bost Extension Center, would operate the office.
Committee chair Wayne Reed said Mail Services has been asked to develop a proposed budget for operating the office. The committee also requested a list of advantages and disadvantages the university would encounter if it chooses to become a private contractor with the U.S. Postal Service.
As for the USPS, the committee is requesting budget information. Specifically, the committee wants to look at last year's revenue figures and expenditure records for the YMCA-based facility.
The committee's latest action came at a Sept. 6 meeting. Reed said the committee plans to meet again in two weeks.
