Block Party set for downtown Starkville

Music, food and fun are on the agenda for the Nov. 1 Homecoming Block Party in downtown Starkville.

At 5:30 p.m., the festivities will begin at the National Bank of Commerce with an autograph party for football coach Jackie Sherrill and his players.

At 6 p.m., the block party begins with the closing of the downtown area from Jackson Street (east of NBC) to Caldwell Street (next to Bulldog Sporting Goods). The streets will remain closed until 9 p.m.

NBC's pep rally on the plaza is set for 6-7 p.m. The Homecoming Court will be introduced and coaches and players will address the crowd. In addition, the MSU Pep Band will play and students and organizations will compete for the NBC Spirit Award ($100 first prize; $50 for second place).

Bully and the other cheerleaders will be on hand and face painting and balloons will be provided for children.

Cokes, popcorn and Cajun sno-cones will be complimentary and pizza, hamburgers and hot dogs will be for sale.

At 7 p.m., the MSU Pep Band, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the MSU Custodial Choir will take turns performing on the NBC Plaza.

And, at the east end of the block, partygoers may dance to "Deep Greens," a rock band composed of MSU students, which will play 7-8 p.m. The Turner Brothers Blues Band is scheduled to perform 8-9 p.m.

If rain requires cancellation, university officials will alert local radio and television stations.
