Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Fellowships in American History
Agency: American Antiquarian Society
Next Deadline: JAN 15, 1997
Long and short-term residential fellowships support study in early American history using the Society's collections. The Society offers fellowships in three categories with stipends ranging from $850 to $30,000 for one to twelve months of study. Pre- and postdoctoral research is supported. Non-stipend Research Associate appointments are also available. The Society also sponsors joint fellowships with the Newberry Library.

Program: Grants for East European Studies
Agency: American Council of Learned Societies
Next Deadline: JAN 31, 1997
Awards fellowships for research and training in the social sciences and humanities relating to Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the eastern part of Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and the successor states of Yugoslavia. Deadlines are 11/1 for postdoctoral research fellowships ($30,000) and dissertation fellowships ($15,000); and 1/31 for language training grants for summer study in any East European language ($2,500).

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Nonprofit Sector Research Fund
Agency: Aspen Institute
Next Deadline: JAN 02, 1997
Supports basic and applied research on the nonprofit sector in the U.S. through research grants (up to $50,000), larger scale research (up to $100,000), and doctoral dissertation research grants (up to $20,000). Principal areas of interest are democracy; role of nonprofits; advocacy; philanthropy; governance; public accountability; financial resources; nonprofit workforce; and international dimensions of nonprofit activities. Program: ETS Fellowships
Agency: Educational Testing Service
Next Deadline: JAN 15, 1997
Up to four postdoctoral fellowships of $35,000 are awarded annually to conduct research at ETS for one year in the following areas: statistics, psychometrics, psychology, policy studies, minority issues, technology, higher education, vocational testing, and other testing issues. One or two visiting scholar awards also are available annually for research on education for Black, Hispanic, or other minority students (February 1, 1997 deadline). Summer programs for graduate students are also available.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Conference Grants on Health Effects of Toxic Substances
Agency: Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
Next Deadline: JAN 08, 1997
Program provides partial support for non-federal conferences on disease prevention, health promotion and information/education projects in the following areas: health effects of toxic substances; disease and exposure registries; hazardous substance removal and remediation; emergency response to toxic and environmental disasters; risk communication; disease surveillance; and investigation and research. See the May 1, 1996 Federal Register for details. ATSDR will make six awards of about $8,000 in FY 97.

Program: Research Awards
Agency: American Digestive Health Foundation
Next Deadline: JAN 10, 1997
Supports basic and clinical research and the development of research careers of young investigators in gastroenterology and related fields. Awards fund students, medical residents and professionals at every level of their careers. One program particularly encourages women and minority applicants. About 16 different award types are available, most with either a January 10 or September 10 deadline. In addition, four categories of endoscopic research awards have September 1 or December 1 deadlines.

Science/Engineering

Program: Grants for Natural History Research
Agency: American Museum of Natural History
Next Deadline: JAN 15, 1997
Frank Chapman Memorial Fund (1/15 deadline) supports ornithological research; Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund (2/15 deadline) supports research on North American fauna, except birds; Lerner-Gray Fund for Marine Research (3/15 deadline) supports marine zoology with emphasis on systematics, evolution, ecology, and field oriented behavior. Awards assist advanced graduate students and postdoctoral researchers for one year and average $700.

Program: New Investigator Award
Agency: American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers
Next Deadline: DEC 01, 1996
Provides up to $45,000 for new investigators of engineering in the areas of heating, refrigerating, or air-conditioning. Applicants must be within five years of receiving the Ph.D. or within five years of the start of their first tenure track appointment.

Program: ASA/NSF/BLS Research Fellow and Associate Program
Agency: American Statistical Association
Next Deadline: JAN 17, 1997
Fellowships for senior researchers support six months to one year of research at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Applicants are encouraged to do research in socioeconomic or methodological areas and to use BLS data and resources including computer and library facilities. BLS data series includes the following areas: employment, prices and living conditions, wages and industrial relations, productivity and technology, and occupational safety and health.
