Arts/Humanities/International

Program: NATO Fellowships
Agency: Council for International Exchange of Scholars
Next Deadline: JAN 01, 1997
Supports research in the social sciences dealing with Alliance security and political issues. Fellowships go to citizens of NATO countries and are offered in three categories: individual fellowships; institutional fellowships for cooperative research between university departments or international studies centers; and the Manfred Worner Fellowship. An average of three to five individual and institutional fellowships are awarded per year to U.S. citizens. One Worner Fellowship is awarded each year. Fellows must pursue their work in one or more NATO countries.

Program: Chateaubriand Fellowship Program
Agency: French Embassy
Next Deadline: DEC 31, 1996
Provides doctoral and postdoctoral fellowship support for U.S. citizens in scientific, engineering or medically related disciplines to study economic, political and social aspects of contemporary France. Research is conducted at the French university, laboratory or school of engineering. Fellowships are available for six to 12 month periods, with a monthly stipend of $1800 for doctoral fellows and $2400 for postdoctoral fellows. Fax application requests to 202/944-6244.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Grant Program
Agency: Upjohn (W.E.) Institute for Employment Research
Next Deadline: JAN, 1997
Grants support research on the causes, effects and measures for alleviation of unemployment at the national, state and local levels. FY 96 priorities are employment relationships, low wages and public policy, and decentralization of government-sponsored employment programs. The maximum grant award is $45,000, plus $25,000 to conduct surveys or to assemble unpublished data. The above deadline is for three-page project summaries. FY 97 information will be finalized in fall 1996.

Program: Ounce of Prevention Grant Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Justice
Next Deadline: DEC, 1996
Supports coordination of youth crime and violence prevention activities and service delivery (including education, recreation, mentoring, tutoring, employment services, job placement, and substance abuse, child abuse, and adolescent pregnancy prevention and treatment). In FY 97, grants will support community-based organizations and substance abuse prevention. Although run by the Council, this program will be administered by DOJ in FY 97 and announced in the Federal Register in October or November with a tentative application deadline of December 1996.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Research Awards
Agency: Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America
Next Deadline: JAN 01, 1997
Supports research in the basic biomedical and clinical sciences in the etiology, pathogenesis, therapy, and prevention of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Research Grants of up to $160,000 over two years fund preliminary studies by established investigators to allow them to later secure funds from other sources. Career Development Awards provide up to $40,000 over two years for new investigators. Research Fellowships allow for up to $90,000 over three years, plus a $2,000 travel allowance to attend basic science meetings.

Program: FDA Conference Grants
Agency: Food and Drug Administration
Next Deadline: JAN 15, 1997
A limited number of grants ranging from $2,000 to $15,000 will be made annually to support direct costs only for scientific conferences on topics directly related to FDA's mission and funding priorities. Grants may provide limited support for certain aspects of conferences held outside the U.S. or Canada, but not general support. Applicants should discuss their projects with an FDA program officer and allow six to nine months lead time before submission. Information contained in the April 15, 1987 Federal Register announcement is still current.

Science/Engineering

Program: Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships (Geophysics Laboratory)
Agency: Carnegie Institution of Washington
Next Deadline: JAN 15, 1997
One-year predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships support research in the earth sciences at the Geophysical Lab, one of five divisions of the Washington-based Carnegie Institution. Fellows focus on such areas of research as irreversible thermodynamics, computer programming, spectral and mineral physics, and biogeochemistry.

Program: Environmental Education Grants Program
Agency: Environmental Protection Agency
Next Deadline: JAN, 1997
Supports classroom training, curriculum development and dissemination, field studies, library maintenance, and seminars on issues concerning ecological conditions or environmental problems. Educational institutions, local or state education agencies and nonprofit organizations may apply for headquarters grants of $25,000 to $250,000 or regional grants of up to $25,000, with grantee providing a 25% match of the project cost. Provides travel support for studies on issues shared by the U.S., Canada and Mexico. FY 97 program will be announced in fall 1996.
