John Marszalek, history, recently lectured at the University of Notre Dame on "William Tecumseh Sherman's Military Campaigns for Order in the Civil War South." He also reviewed "Guide to Civil War Books: An Annotated Selection of Modern Works on The War Between the States" for the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society.


John E. Forde, communication, is the new president of the Southern Public Relations Federation. The SPRF is the umbrella organization for 15 local chapters of four regional groups in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida.


John Usher, industrial engineering, received an advising award from the National Council of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society for Freshmen for his five years of service to the society.


Dr. Robert K. Collins, director of the Longest Student Health Center, has been included in Marquis' Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare 1997-98. He was also appointed by the American College Health Association to another term on the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations. He will serve on the commission's Ambulatory Healthcare Professional Technical Advisory Committee.


Jim Turner, curriculum and instruction, has been named to the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education's Drafting Committee for the New Professional Teacher Standards Development Project. He will represent the field of elementary education on the 15-20 member national committee which will draft a document on the development of performance standards relating to accreditation.


The Southern Sociological Society recently passed a resolution thanking Martin Levin, sociology, anthropology and social work, for his years of service as secretary-treasurer of the society. SSS is the largest of the regional sociological associations with a membership of just under 2,000.


A recent edition of Biology featured research conducted by Walter J. Diehl, biological sciences, and his students. They are studying the interaction between environmental variation and the genetic composition of an organism as it affects life history characteristics using red wiggler earthworms.


Geoscience's Broadcast Meteorology Program was included in an article on "Interesting College Programs" in Ferguson's Off to College magazine.


Douglas Feig, political science, was commended by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for his service as president for the Mississippi State chapter of PKP. The chapter is the oldest and largest national honor society at the university.

The fourth edition of "Applied Animal Reproduction," co-authored by H. Joe Bearden and John W. Fuquay, recently was published. Bearden is professor emeritus of dairy science and Fuquay is professor of animal and dairy sciences. George Taylor, agricultural communications, provided the line drawings for the book and Marco Nicovich, also of ag communications, did the photography.



Steve Word, general manager of the Mississippi State Bookstore, has been designated a Certified Store Professional by the National Association of College Stores. Certification is based on an individual's experience and involvement in the college store industry and level of community service. Word has managed the bookstore, operated by Follett, since 1986.
