Arts/Humanities/International
Program: Grants to U.S. Institutions of Higher Education
Agency: National Security Education Program
Next Deadline: APR 19, 1996
Assists U.S. colleges and universities to strengthen programs in crucial foreign languages, area studies and international fields. Supports one or two year grants in foreign languages, countries and areas underrepresented in U.S. higher education; opportunities to incorporate international education into the curriculum; and improvements in study abroad infrastructure and U.S. college and university international education infrastructure. Program: Summer Institute
Agency: Newberry Library
Next Deadline: MAR 01, 1996
Supports 20 college and university faculty members in a five-week course based on the Newberry's renowned collections of cartographic materials. Participants will be selected on the basis of their records as teachers and the likely impact the Institute will have on their courses. The National Endowment for the Humanities jointly sponsors the Institute, which provides $1,250 stipends plus $2,500 to cover travel and lodging expenses. The 1996 Institute is entitled "Cartography and History: Using Maps in Teaching the Humanities."
Program: The Henry A. Murray Dissertation Award Program
Agency: Radcliffe College
Next Deadline: APR 01, 1996
Supports doctoral dissertations on some aspect of "the study of lives." Priority will be given to projects using the Henry A. Murray Research Center, a repository of social and behavioral sciences data for the study of lives over time, with a focus on American women. The Center's research currently focuses on "Character and Competence: Exploring Pathways of Development Across the Lifespan," including development values; social responsibility; and social, intellectual, and emotional adaptation and competence. The grant amount is $2,500.
Education/Human and Community Development
Program: African-American Accounting Doctoral Support Program
Agency: KPMG Peat Marwick Foundation
Next Deadline: APR 01, 1996
Provides $10,000 per year scholarships (renewable for up to five years) for African-American doctoral students scheduled to begin doctoral programs in September 1996. Institution must provide $5,000 annual stipend unrelated to teaching, waive tuition and fees, and provide teaching/research assistantships.

Agency: Sister Fund
Next Deadline: APR 01, 1996
Supports advocacy, public education, and media strategies that heighten public consciousness around issues affecting women and girls and emphasize women's leadership. Projects may focus on women's economic development, violence against women and girls, and women's reproductive rights. Grants range from $5,000 to $30,000.
Program: Doctoral Disseration and Basic Research Grant Programs
Agency: Society for Human Resources Management Foundation
Next Deadline: APR 05, 1996
Supports studies and/or implementation of human resource practices. Topics include job and organizational design, performance management/measurement, development, compensation, and motivation, as well as national issues such as workforce effectiveness. At least six doctoral dissertation awards provide $2,500 each. Basic research grants range from $1,000 to $30,000.
Health/Mental Health
Program: Allied-Signal Award for Biomedical Research in Aging
Agency: Alliance for Aging Research
Next Deadline: MAR 18, 1996
Funded by Allied-Signal Inc., award provides $200,000 for a two-year, highly innovative research project on an aspect of human aging. Applicants' proposed projects may address either basic or clinical research. Two-page preproposals are due by the above date.
Program: Research Grants Program
Agency: Alzheimer's Association
Next Deadline: MAR 01, 1996
Supports research relating to Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Awards provide $50,000 per year, although additional funds may be awarded in exceptional cases. Grants may last for periods of one, two, or three years. Letters of intent may be submitted during the period from February 1 through March 1.
Science/Engineering
Program: ONR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
Agency: American Society for Engineering Education
Next Deadline: APR 01, 1996
Approximately 40 awards are made to U.S. scientists who have received their doctoral degrees within the past seven years to conduct research at participating Navy centers and laboratories. Applicants should contact the proposed research facility (listed in brochure) to develop a project addressing a problem of mutual interest to the investigator and the host facility. Appointments are made for one to three years. Stipends range from $36,000 to $52,000, depending on experience. ONR also supports a sabbatical leave program (same deadlines).
