Mississippi State University must have an approved Federal Property System in order to receive federal funds for sponsored projects. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) in Atlanta, Georgia is Mississippi State's cognizant agency designated to conduct an audit of Mississippi State's Federal Property System once every two years. The university's Federal Property System was approved by ONR as a result of a recent audit conducted by ONR in August 1995.
In fact, the audit contained no findings that required corrective action by Mississippi State. This is a credit to all of the individuals who have worked so hard to establish and maintain MSU's Federal Property System.
Mississippi State has published a "Property Manual for Government Property" which details procedures for the purchase, inventory, reporting, and disposal of federal property. This manual has been reviewed and approved by ONR. Non-compliance with the processes and procedures detailed in the manual can result in property audit exceptions, fines for serious or repeated non-compliance and suspension of Mississippi State University from receiving federal funds.
Mississippi State's Property Control Office is responsible for the inventory and reporting of federal property. Sponsored Programs Administration is responsible for administrative actions that may be required regarding federal property such as equipment title, procurement approval and disposition instructions.
Questions regarding federal property should be directed to Scott Alexander of Property Control at 325-2545 or Tina Henson of Sponsored Programs Administration at 325-3273.
