Latest political, public issue studies published by Institute

Four new reports on issues of statewide public interest are now available from the Stennis Institute of Government.

The topics include: an analysis of a statewide Democrat-Republican candidate preference poll, an examination of the public split between the two political parties, a pilot study on the scope of services provided by non-profit organizations on behalf of state municipalities, and a study-titled "Who Pays to Play?"-of voluntary tax incidence as related to Mississippi gaming.

Each publication is free.

In keeping with its public service mission, the Stennis Institute has produced a series of similar reports in recent years.

"We feel strongly that the widespread distribution of reasoned and researched reports such as these can serve as a basis for substantive public discussions," said institute researcher Don E. Slabach. "The ultimate goal is to provide Mississippians with a better understanding of the workings of government and politics."

Established more than 20 years ago, the John C. Stennis Institute of Government is named for the national leader from DeKalb who rose to become president pro tempore of the United States Senate. Its threefold mission is to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of state and local government, provide technical assistance and research for rural development and regional activities, and promote civic education and citizen involvement in the political process.

Stennis, who died in April of 1995, was a 1923 Mississippi State graduate. He retired from the U.S. Senate in 1988 after 41 years of service. Prior to that, he was a circuit judge.

To obtain copies of the reports, telephone the institute at 325-3328 or write in care of Drawer LV, Mississippi State, MS 39762. Don Slabach's e-mail address is slabach@sig.msstate.edu.
