Session on agricultural advances set

Dr. Jerry Caulder, known for his efforts in agricultural biotechnology, will address the importance of scientific advances to keep the state's agriculture competitive during an upcoming visit to Mississippi State.

Caulder, head of the California-based Mycogen Corp., will speak at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Wise Center auditorium.

Mycogen develops and markets environmentally compatible biopesticides and improved crop varieties to control pests and to increase food and fiber production.

Biotechnology refers to the use of living organisms or their products to improve human health or the environment. Examples of biotechnology in agriculture include the development of disease or insect resistant plants, such as Bt cotton, and the use of growth hormones in cattle.

The goals of biotechnological advances are to increase production and reduce chemical usage, thereby decreasing production costs and increasing profits.

For more information on Caulder's visit or on biotechnology efforts, contact Dr. Dawn Luthe at 325-7733.
