University policies and federal regulations require that all research involving human subjects, conducted by faculty, staff and students both on and off campus, be reviewed and approved by a review board.
The university's Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research (IRB) must be consulted prior to initiating the research, according to Sponsored Programs Administration.
Human subjects research includes the following: teaching methods, effects of curriculum, educational testing, surveys, interviews, observation of public behavior, existing data/records, and some training programs which involve a research component. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in a loss of all federal monies for the university and can seriously compromise the validity of individual research projects.
The IRB application can now be accessed from the Sponsored Programs Administration home page at http://www.msstate.edu/Dept/SPA/spa.html. You may also pick up a copy from 314 Bowen Hall.
If you have further questions regarding research involving human subjects, please contact Robyn Remotigue at 325-3994 or Robyn@spa.msstate.edu.
