Dr. Charles H. White, department head and professor of food science and technology, has received a congressional appointment to serve on the National Nutrition Monitoring Advisory Council.
The council provides technical assistance to improve the National Nutrition Monitoring and Related Research Program and the Ten-Year Comprehensive Plan.
The program is composed of interconnected federal and state activities that provide information about the dietary and nutritional status of the U.S. population conditions affecting the dietary and nutritional status of individuals, and relationships between diet and health.
The Ten-Year Comprehensive Plan for Nutrition Monitoring and Related Research, mandated by Congress, is the basis for planning and coordinating the activities of 22 federal agencies responsible for nutrition monitoring and related research activities.
An additional function of the council include providing guidance and submitting annual reports to the secretaries of agriculture and health and human services, including recommendations for enhancing the program's effectiveness.
