Accounting alumnus to lead alumni association during 1998

Bill Long of Webb, a 1981 Mississippi State accounting graduate, is the new national president of the alumni association.

Long, territory manager for the Griffin Corp., was elected by his peers at the association's recent annual campus meeting. He has served on the alumni association board for almost a decade, most recently as first national vice president.

He succeeds J. Durr Boyles of Jackson, a 1982 biological engineering graduate and principal with the insurance firm of Boyles, Moak and Brickell.

The association also elected other national and regional officers at the meeting. All terms begin in January.

"I've been fortunate to work with Bill Long for many years and he always has been a valuable asset to our alumni association," said executive director John V. Correro. "We look forward to the enthusiasm and commitment he will bring in service to Mississippi State alumni over the next year."

Long is a member of the Bulldog Club and served in 1996 as president of the Mississippi Agricultural Chemical Council.

Also elected to lead the 85,000-member association were:

• Lamar A. Conerly Jr. of Destin, Fla., national first vice president. An attorney, he is a 1971 accounting graduate who has served on the association's board of directors since 1992.
• Steve Taylor of Tupelo, national second vice president. Senior vice president for Deposit Guaranty National Bank, he received a bachelor's degree in banking and finance in 1977 and a master's in business administration in 1981.
• S. Keith Winfield of Starkville continues as national treasurer. He is a 1970 accounting graduate and partner in the accounting firm of Watkins, Ward and Stafford.

In addition, five new regional officers were selected at the meeting. They include:

• Allen Maxwell of New Albany, North 2 Region director. A commercial underwriter with State Auto Insurance Co., he is a 1978 business graduate.
• Ronnie Sleeper of Corinth, Northern Region young director. He is a finance/personnel manager for Patrick Home Center Inc. and a 1990 marketing graduate.
• Joe Bryan of Yazoo City, Central 1 Region director. A 1963 agricultural economics major, he is senior vice president for the Bank of Yazoo City.
• Charles Farrior of Gautier, South 3 Region director. He is a contracting officer/supervisory contract specialist for the United States Navy's Shipbuilding Division and a 1982 banking and finance graduate.
• Archie Cammack of Mobile, Ala., out-of-state director. A senior field representative for Wausau Insurance Co., he is a 1964 general business administration graduate.
