ARTS/HUMANITIES/INTERNATIONAL

Program: Fellowships in American History
Agency: American Antiquarian Society
Next Deadline: JAN 15, 1998
Long and short-term residential fellowships support research in early American history using the Society's collections. Stipends range from $950 monthly to $30,000 annually for one to 12 months of study at both pre- and postdoctoral levels (01/15/98 deadline). Non-stipend Research Associate positions and joint fellowships with the Newberry Library are also sponsored. The Mellon Post-Dissertation Fellowship is for longer term (12 months minimum) research by a scholar three years beyond dissertation (10/14/1997 deadline) See gopher://mark.mwa.org:70/1other.dir.

Program: Solicited Grants Projects
Agency: United States Institute of Peace
Next Deadline: JAN 02, 1998
Supports research, training and information dissemination on international peace and conflict management. FY 98 priority areas are the following: international organizations; post-settlement peace building; virtual diplomacy; and arms control. Web page: http://www.usip.org/grants.html. EDUCATION/HUMAN AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Program: Women's Educational Equity Act Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: NOV 24, 1997
Supports development of educational materials and model programs designed to promote women's educational equity. There are two categories: Implementation (84.083A) and Research and Development (84.083B). See the October 9, 1997 Federal Register for details.

Program: Rehabilitation Projects With Industry
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: JAN 13, 1998
Supports the provision of training, employment services and support services for individuals with disabilities in a work setting through cooperative agreements with for-profit and non-profit organizations. ED expects to announce the FY 98 program in October 1997.

HEALTH/MENTAL HEALTH

Program: Health Careers Opportunity Program
Agency: Health Resources and Services Administration
Next Deadline: JAN 30, 1998
Awards grants to health professions schools and schools of allied health for programs to assist individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter and graduate from health professions schools or allied health training programs. Eligible activities include identification and recruitment, preliminary education, facilitation of admission, retention, counseling, and provision of advice on financial aid. Program: Academic Research Enhancement Awards
Agency: National Institutes of Health
Next Deadline: JAN 25, 1998
Competitive three-year renewable awards of up to $75,000 support individual faculty research projects to strengthen the research environment of institutions that provide health-related baccalaureate training for research scientists, but have received less than $2 million in NIH funding for four or more of the last seven years. SCIENCE/ENGINEERING

Program: Environmental Geochemistry and Biogeochemistry Program
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: JAN 07, 1998
Supports interdisciplinary research involving organic, inorganic, bioinorganic and bioorganic chemistry, geochemistry, hydrology, biology, colloid and transport engineering, and mathematics to address environmental problems related to soils, groundwaters, surface waters, and coastal marine areas. Research will lead to a multi-faceted perspective and predictive understanding of complex interactions of the geosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere as they relate to chemical transport.

Program: Sociology Program
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: JAN 15, 1998
Target Date: proposals may be submitted at any time.
Supports research designed to build and test theories of social processes, organization, and change. Program supports primary data collection, secondary data analyses, and both micro and macro analyses of social differentiation and stratification, institutions (such as family and religion), occupations and organizations, demography, social mobility, socialization, gender roles, and the sociology of science and technology.
