Johns-Harrison Duo to perform November 25

The Johns-Harrison Duo will present a Faculty Artist Concert Nov. 25.

Lana Johns, flute, and Joel Harrison, piano, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the McComas Hall theater.

The program includes selections by Johannes Brahms, as well as the following pieces:

• “First Sonata for Flute and Piano” by Boshuslav Martinu: a three-movement work displaying a neoclassic trend with impressionistic undertones;

• “Sonata for Flute and Piano” by Ervin Schulhoff: a four-movement work in the neoclassic tradition with rhythmic and dance elements of both Moravian folk music and jazz;

• “Bright Air/Brilliant Fire” by Diane Thome: commissioned in 1996 by Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity for its national convention. The initial composition evolved from a quotation by Empedocles, the 6th century Greek physician, poet and philosopher of mind—“For by earth we see earth, by water water; by air bright air, and by fire brilliant fire.”;

• “Grand Mamou” by Paul Hayden: each of the four movements is based on a Louisiana Cajun folk song.

  Debbie Funderburk, a modern dance instructor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport, will lead her students in a performance during “Bright Air/Brilliant Fire.” Funderburk and Alex Brown, University Television Center, choreographed the dance.
