Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Fellowship Program
Agency: Media Studies Center
Next Deadline: FEB 01, 1998
Awards residential fellowships to media educators and professionals and scholars from other fields interested in systematic research or professional projects on important media topics. Priority is given to projects that foster greater public understanding of how the media work, strengthen journalism practice and education, or examine the effects of mass communication and communication technology on society. Broad-based, great-issue projects are preferred to narrow, single-topic studies. In 1997, 11 awards were made. See http://www.mediastudies.org.

Program: Fellowship Program
Agency: Institute for the Study of World Politics
Next Deadline: FEB 17, 1998
Supports doctoral dissertation research for minority and non-minority candidates (February 17 deadline) and master's/early doctoral research (March deadline) for minority students only, in areas pertaining to international arms proliferation and restrictions, technology, energy, food, health, education, environmental issues and economic/social development in developing countries, as well as assisting in the development of more effective ways to protect human rights.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Grants Program
Agency: BellSouth Foundation
Next Deadline: FEB 01, 1998
Supports the initiation of education reform programs in the following broad topics: developing individual capacity to improve learning; creating environments to improve learning; and promoting partnerships through technology to improve learning. Program: Managing Information with Rural America (MIRA)
Agency: Kellogg (W.K.) Foundation
Next Deadline: DEC 30, 1997
MIRA is a major four-year initiative of Kellogg's Food Systems and Rural Development Program area designed to assist rural communities in using information systems and technologies to enhance community development. Five community clusters comprised of six to ten teams per cluster will be selected (deadline 12/30/97). There will be ten to fifteen community support organizations per cluster (deadline 4/15/98) and at least one policy support organization chosen to work with each cluster (deadline 11/30/97). Health/Mental Health

Program: Occupational Safety and Health Research
Agency: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Next Deadline: FEB 01, 1998
Supports research and demonstration projects related to occupational safety and health. Priority areas include: work environment issues; irritant dermatitis; asthma; fertility/pregnancy abnormalities; hearing loss; infectious diseases; low back disorders; traumatic injuries; and research tools. Program: Support of Scientific Meetings
Agency: National Institutes of Health
Next Deadline: FEB 01, 1998
Program supports national and international meetings directed toward objectives clearly within the areas of Public Health Service scientific program missions. Each NIH institute or division may support those applications in which it has an interest. Allowable costs include: salaries, equipment rental, supplies and services, travel and per diem allowance, publication costs, and registration and speaker fees. Supports projects in these areas: exploratory research (environmental biology, 3/31 deadline; human health, 12/16 deadline; environmental chemistry, 12/16 deadline; physics, 3/12 deadline; environmental engineering, 3/12 deadline; contact Clyde Bishop at 202/564-6914); indicators of global climate change (2/12 deadline; contact Barbara Levinson at 202/564-6911); and interindividual variation in human susceptibility to environmentally-caused disease (2/12 deadline; contact David Reese at 202/564-6919). Program: Research Grants in Advanced Science
Agency: Eppley Foundation
Next Deadline: FEB 01, 1998
Provides support for research in advanced scientific subjects in the biological and physical sciences. Grants are made to recognized educational and charitable organizations in support of postdoctoral projects. Grants will not support research on cancer, cardiology or AIDS. The Foundation is interested in supporting research for which federal support is not available. Grants of up to $25,000 support one year of research. The Foundation makes about 12 awards each year.

Program: NSF/EPA Partnership for Environmental Research
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: JAN 15, 1998
Jointly administered NSF/Environmental Protection Agency program supports fundamental, extramural environmental research on alternating topics of interest. For FY 98, topics include water and watersheds; technology for a sustainable environment; and decision making and valuation for environmental policy.
