Mohamed El-Attar, sociology, anthropology and social work, presented "Interrelations of Changes in the Occupational, Industrial and Educational Structures of Employment in Egypt, 1960-1986" at the Arab Regional Population Conference in Cairo, Egypt. The ARPC was a result of the 1994 World Population Conference and was organized by the Arab Demographers Association, the Cairo Demographic Centre, the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, the League of Arab States, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, and the U.N. Population Fund.


A book written by Michael Thorne, psychology, and Steve Slane has just gone into its second printing. The second edition of "Statistics for the Behavorial Sciences," first published in 1989, was recently printed by Mayfield Publishing Co. of Mountain View, Calif.


Fuquay John W. Fuquay, animal and dairy sciences, received the Honors Award from the American Dairy Science Association, Southern Branch, at its recent annual meeting in Birmingham. The citation for the association's highest award highlighted his service to the Journal of Dairy Science, including seven years on the editorial board, four year as an editor and his recent appointment as the first editor-in-chief of the publication.



Tim Atkinson, sponsored programs, presented a paper entitled "The Institutional Construction and Transformation of University Research Administration" to the Southeastern Higher Education Student Symposium during the Leadership Symposium on the Peabody College campus at Vanderbilt University. His paper covered a brief overview of new institutional theories and explained how they could help college and university administrators of research institutions.


The new associate editor of Sociological Inquiry is Peter B. Wood, sociology, anthropology and social work. The publication is the journal of Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society. Wood's appointment is for four years.


Marita Gootee, art, was recently accepted into the International Photography and Digital Image Exhibition in the Wellington B. Gray Gallery of East Carolina University. The artwork will be exhibited through March 4. Gootee's work, "Attachment," is a tintype, a method using aluminum, glossy black polyurethane and Silverprint liquid emulsion. The gallery is located in the Jenkins Fine Art Center at ECU.


Charles A. Henderson, procurement and contracts, was elected regional president of the National Association of Educational Buyers Inc. at its regional meeting in Memphis. NAEB is the professional association serving purchasing and and materials management professionals at colleges and universities across the country and is composed of 19 regions. More than 100 colleges, universities and community colleges are members in the Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi region.


David Banks, computer science, received the Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation. The CAREER grant is designed to encourage junior-level faculty in science and engineering to integrate their research and education efforts early in their careers.


Jack H. White, University Honors Program, is the new chair of the Mississippi Humanities Council. The council provides lifelong educational and intellectual opportunities for all adult Mississippians and creates public forums for dialogue on significant issues facing society.


Janie Gregg, management-Meridian Campus, recently presented several papers, along with her research partners. At the Southwestern Business Administration Teaching Conference in Houston, Texas, Gregg and Frances Smith, MSU-Meridian business student, presented "Group Testing, Reinforcement and Learning"; Annette Taylor, Kemper County High School, and Gregg presented "Listen and Learn"; Gregg, Taylor, Brenda Harper, MSU-Meridian business student, and D. Chase Gregg, Northeast Middle School student (Meridian) presented "Developing Decision-Making Skills through Computer Games: SIMCITY."
