Web Notes

The university's World Wide Web page has garnered two honors in as many weeks. The site, designed by a team led by assistant University Relations director Bennet George, won second place in annual competition sponsored by District III of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. Case District III includes more than 500 schools, colleges and universities in the Southeastern United States. The web site also was named a "Gold Site" by NetGuide Live. The online publication of Manhasset, N.Y.-based CMP Media Inc. said Mississippi State's presentation is "one of the best on the web." NetGuide, a comprehensive daily guide to the web, screened more than 100,000 URLs and reviewed more than 50,000 sites. Gold Awards were then presented to 15,000 of the "web's best sites." The Mississippi State home page may be accessed at <http://www.msstate.edu/>.

The Historical Text Archive maintained by Donald Mabry, history, was named academic web site winner in competition sponsored by the Mississippi Ed Tech conference, Mississippi Educational Television and The Learning Exchange. The site has been recognized as a Suite 101 Top 30 Education Site and as a Magellan Three-Star Site, and it has won the Afrolinks Week Award, among others. Access the archive at <http://www.msstate.edu/Archives/History>.

Students from Oktibbeha County's Alexander Attendance Center are using the National Science Foundation's Engineering Research Center computer resources to access the World Wide Web. The students are searching the web for more information on colleges and universities where they might pursue degrees. In addition, they are working on an electronic mail survey with their keypals-a pre-calculus class at Hilton (N.Y.) High School and algebra II and advanced placement calculus classes in Milton (Wisc.) High School. The students, under the direction of graduate student Kasonya T. Lampkin, are compiling data on possible career choices and the range of salaries they can expect. Results will be posted at the end of the spring semester on the ERC web page <http://www.msstate.edu/education/hs_outreach_intro.html>.
