Get a kick out of Cole Porter performance

The life and music of American composer Cole Porter will highlight a Feb. 25 performance at Mississippi State.

The 7:30 p.m. program in Lee Hall auditorium, titled "Red Hot & Cole," is part of the university's 1997 Lyceum Series. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens (by request) and $3 for children 3-12.

Tunes such as "I Get a Kick Out of You," "Anything Goes," "I Love Paris," "Don't Fence Me In," and "You're the Top" will be featured in a program that also includes dance and dialogue. To set the stage for Porter's life and times, players recreate 25 characters ranging from playwright George Kaufman and lyricist Ira Gershwin to writer and wit Dorothy Parker.

An ensemble of 10 actors and four musicians present Porter's life as a continuous "musical party" in Europe and America of the 1930s and the decades following. The performance traces his marriage, friendships and a tragic riding accident that crippled him mid-career.

"Red Hot & Cole" has been called "a sparkling revue" by the Washington Post and "delightful, delicious and 'de-lovely'" by the Los Angeles Times.
