Agency: Consortium of Colleges and University Media Centers

Supports the development of new knowledge and practices leading to increased accessibility to and utilization of educational media, equipment, or technology. Preference goes to studies with general application to the field. Studies should focus on the production, selection, development, information retrieval, utilization, distribution, or management of educational technology. Grants of up to $2,000 may go to graduate students and faculty whose institutions are consortium members. The 1997 program will be announced in February.

Funded through a grant from USIA, the program offers grants for the development of campus-based and community projects to enhance the experience of foreign students at U.S. colleges and universities and U.S. students participating in study abroad. Maximum award is $6,000. Mini-grant proposals (under $1,000) also are available and may be submitted at any time (must allow four weeks review time before starting project).

Agency: American Honda Foundation

Awards are made to non-profit organizations, including colleges and universities, for projects that meet the most pressing needs of youth, as related to science education, environmental education and job training. Emphasis is on broad, innovative and forward-thinking projects with national scope that are dedicated to improving the human condition. Grants during the past year ranged from $10,000 to $100,000.
Program: Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: APR, 1997
Provides fellowships to students of superior ability to pursue doctoral level graduate study in the arts, humanities or social sciences. Fellows are selected by a national board on the basis of demonstrated achievement and exceptional promise. Each fellow's institution receives a cost of instruction payment in lieu of tuition. FY 97 eligibility criteria have not yet been determined. Send name and address to uri_monson@ed.gov for application kit. FY 97 program may be announced in late February at the earliest with 45-day deadline.
Program: Health Services Dissertation Research Grants
Agency: Agency for Health Care Policy and Research
Next Deadline: MAY 08, 1997
Provide support to doctoral students in the social, medical, management, or health sciences for research in the organization, delivery, financing, or quality of health care services. Program is competitive and is aimed at stimulating small-scale, innovative studies on current issues and problems in health services delivery, and at encouraging new health services researchers. Awards are usually for one year and provide direct costs of up to $30,000. AHCPR makes 15 to 20 awards yearly. See http://www.ahcpr.gov:80/news/96016.htm.

Agency: Good Samaritan, Inc. Foundation

Target Date: - proposals may be submitted at any time.
Supports research and demonstration projects in the following areas: the study and treatment of dyslexia; higher education; medicine; projects relating to Spain; improvement of the administration of justice; and protection of the environment. Recent grants have ranged in size from $1,000 to $60,000 with a few special grants in excess of $1 million. The Board of Directors meets to consider applications on or about the first Thursday in June and the third Thursday in November. Applicants should submit proposals at least four weeks prior to board meetings.

Agency: American Astronomical Society
Next Deadline: MAY 09, 1997
Supports the costs associated with any type of astronomical research. Astronomers from smaller, less endowed institutions will be given priority. Awards range in size from $300 to $4,000. Page charges, computing costs, equipment, shipping of equipment, and travel to observatories are all acceptable costs. One award is also made annually for support of Global Observing Eccentric Eclipsing Binaries.
Program: Visiting Professorships in the Microbiological Sciences
Agency: Burroughs Wellcome Fund
Next Deadline: MAY 01, 1997
Supports visits by leading researchers in the following fields: microbiology, virology, biotechnology, parasitology, immunology, bacteriology, and molecular biology. Selected U.S. institutions will receive distinguished scientists, who will spend up to five days at the host institution engaged in teaching and discussion with students and faculty.
