Fellowships provide up to $30,000 for college teachers to pursue six to 12 months of full-time independent study and research that will enhance their capacities as teachers and scholars. Program is designed for both beginning and experienced teachers whose chief responsibilities lie in teaching undergraduate students at institutions that do not have Ph.D. programs in the humanities.

Program is intended for individuals affiliated with institutions with extensive Ph.D. programs in the humanities. Both new investigators and those with significant research experience are eligible.
Program: Library Education and Human Resource Development Program: Institutes
Agency: U.S. Department of Education

Provides awards to IHEs to support library staff training through short-term (6 weeks) or long-term (1 year) institutes. Traditionally, the Department has given absolute priority to projects that recruit more minorities into library sciences, train personnel in shortage or specialty areas, or train personnel in the use of new technologies. See the April 26, 1996 Federal Register for details regarding the FY 96 competition. ED expects to announce the FY 97 program in February with a tentative application deadline in early May 1997.
Program: NIDRR: Research and Demonstration Program

Supports research and demonstrations on daily problems encountered by individuals with disabilities. In the October 31, 1996 Federal Register, NIDRR proposed a funding priority for projects on improving employment practices covered by Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act. NIDRR expects to announce the FY 97 competition in February 1997. The application materials will be included in the Federal Register notice.
Program: National Research Service Awards - Minority Predoctoral Fellowships

Provides fellowships of up to five years for minority graduate students from all types of institutions for biomedical and behavioral research leading to a Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. Provides an annual stipend of $10,000 plus tuition, fees and an institutional allowance of $2,000 that may be used for travel to scientific meetings as well as for lab and other expenses. Program: Cancer Prevention and Control Research Small Grants

Provides awards of $50,000 (direct costs) for up to two years to encourage both new and experienced investigators from a variety of disciplines (disease prevention, public health, health promotion, epidemiology, nutrition, nursing, health policy, behavioral sciences, etc.) to test ideas or conduct pilot studies in human cancer control intervention. Program: New Faculty Awards
Agency: Dreyfus (Camille and Henry) Foundation

About ten grants for new faculty members in chemistry are available to U.S. institutions. Funds will be awarded in time for use by the faculty member when he/she formally begins the first year of teaching. Grants are primarily intended as seed money for new ideas and concepts and not as salary support. Funds may also be used for student research stipends, scientific equipment, or other research needs. Faculty must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry or related chemical engineering. Grant amount is $25,000.
Program: Research Grants in Advanced Science
Agency: Eppley Foundation
Next Deadline: MAY 01, 1997
Provides support for research in advanced scientific subjects in the biological and physical sciences. Grants are made to recognized educational and charitable organizations in support of postdoctoral projects. Grants will not support research on cancer, cardiology or AIDS. The Foundation is interested in supporting research for which federal support is not available. Grants of up to $25,000 support one year of research. The Foundation makes about 12 awards each year.
