Jasper to receive national recognition

A Mississippi State professor is receiving national recognition for her contributions in engineering graphics.

Mary Jasper, associate professor of industrial engineering, will receive the Orthogonal Medal next month at North Carolina State University. The award is given annually by NCSU to professionals who have distinguished themselves in the field of graphic science.

As part of the recognition, Jasper will be the keynote speaker at the NCSU Graphic Communications Distinguished Lecture and Banquet Series March 21-22.

"Mary has been an outspoken leader and one of the few women who have contributed to the field for so long," said Alice Scales, coordinator of graphic communications at the Raleigh institution. "She has consistently shown drive and over-achievement throughout her career." Jasper, a former adviser to the campus chapter of the Society of Women Engineers, holds bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from Mississippi State. She joined the faculty in 1970 after working as an engineer with the state highway department and the Vicksburg-based U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station.

In 1993, she was honored with the Distinguished Service Award by the Engineering Design Graphics Division of the American Society for Engineering Educators.

Jasper currently coordinates the university's Mississippi Alliance for Minority Participation Program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation.
