

Program: Preservation and Access Projects

Supports the creation and preservation of and access to resources important for research, education and public programming in the humanities. Projects may encompass books, journals, newspapers, manuscript and archival materials, maps, still and moving images, sound recording, and objects of material culture. National and regional education and training projects, field projects and related technology programs are also encouraged. Historically black colleges and universities with significant collections of primary materials are encouraged to apply.
Program: Fellowships Program
Agency: Open Society Institute

Individual Project Fellows study the domestic or international development of open society. Awards of up to 18 months range from $15,000 to $100,000, including travel costs. Areas of interest include children's issues of race and class; the reinvigoration of ethics and community service; urban issues; intergovernmental institutions; reproductive health; reducing the harm caused by drug abuse; and support for the dying. Program Development Fellows receive up to $50,000 to spend 18 months assisting the Institute with its new program initiatives.
Program: Federal Old-Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance Research
Agency: Social Security Administration

Supports research to increase knowledge about components of economic security and the changing economic status of the aged or disabled, with an emphasis on Social Security beneficiaries. FY 97 priority areas are analyses of the new beneficiary data systems and research on the integration provisions of social security and private pensions plans. Request application kits from E. Program: Research Grant Competition for New Investigators

Program: Intimate Partner Violence Prevention Program

Next Deadline: MAY 20, 1997
Awards cooperative agreements to community organizations to prevent violence against adolescent and adult women by persons known to them; support community coalition-building activities; and expand existing coalitions. Program does not support research, but universities may collaborate with community organizations. About ten awards will be made in FY 97. Program: Conflict Resolution Program
Agency: Hewlett (William and Flora) Foundation

Supports research, study, and training in conflict resolution. Program categories include support for: organizations whose work advances conflict resolution theory; mediators or other practitioners of third party intervention techniques; and organizations that train or educate potential practitioners of conflict resolution techniques. Deadlines are 1/1/98 for theory organizations; 7/1/97 for training and promotional and public policy decisionmaking organizations; and 10/1/97 for practitioner organizations.
Program: Origins of Solar Systems Program

Supports investigations of planetary systems formations. Research may involve analytical and numerical modeling, laboratory research and observational studies in the following areas: star formation, solar nebula processes, accumulation and dynamical evolution, analysis of primitive materials, and detection of other planetary systems. Program: NAS-NRC Collaboration in Basic Science and Engineering Program (COBASE)
Agency: National Research Council

Supports two types of activities: short-term exchanges of two weeks allow scientists of the U.S./former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe to prepare projects for in-depth research; and long-term exchanges of one to six months allow those scientists to carry out their extended research projects. Total stipends for short-term exchanges range in size from $2,000 to $2,500, and long-term total stipends range from $3,000 to $15,300. The July 7, 1997 deadline is for long-term grants, and the program carries short-term grant deadlines of April 07, August 11 and December 30.
