Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Community Outreach Partnership Centers Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
Next Deadline: JUN 19, 1997
Awards grants to institutions to support centers that conduct research on problems (including housing, health care, crime, education and training, and economic development) in large and small cities and facilitate partnerships and outreach activities between IHEs, local communities and local governments. Grantee must provide 50 percent of the research costs and 25 percent of the outreach costs. For application materials, send a fax to HUD USER at 301/251-5747. Program: Office for Victims of Crime Discretionary Grants Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Justice
Next Deadline: MAY 30, 1997
Supports diverse training and technical efforts, services for federal crime victims, and demonstration programs. FY 97 grants focus on building victim-centered systems to ensure collaboration in the community to support and consult victims throughout the criminal justice process. In FY 97, approximately $14.5 million is available for 13 priority areas. Applications for most projects are due May 30, 1997. OVC also invites concept papers, due November 3, 1997, for potential funding in FY 98. Refer to http://www.ojb.usdoj.gov.ovc/.

Health/Mental Health

Program: NIOSH Special Emphasis Research Career Awards (SERCA) (K01)
Agency: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Next Deadline: JUL 01, 1997
Encourage highly qualified individuals in the earlier stages of postgraduate careers to develop research interests in occupational safety and health. Priority areas include: irritant dermatitis; asthma; reproductive abnormalities; hearing loss; infectious diseases; low back disorders; and traumatic injuries. Program: FDA Conference Grants
Agency: Food and Drug Administration
Next Deadline: JUL 15, 1997
Supports direct costs only for scientific conferences on topics directly related to FDA's mission and funding priorities. Grants may provide limited support for certain aspects of conferences held outside the U.S. or Canada, but not general support. Applicants should discuss their projects with an FDA program officer and allow six to nine months lead time before submission. A very limited number of grants, ranging from $2,000 to $15,000, are made annually. Information contained in the April 15, 1987 Federal Register announcement is still current.

Agency: Mott (Ruth) Fund
Next Deadline: JUL 01, 1997
Supports projects of emerging significance that offer the potential for replication. Arts area supports the arts as a means to a greater educational or social goal, especially to promote cultural diversity. Environment area fosters public understanding and involvement in protecting public resources. Health Promotion projects focus on the health issues of low-income populations by fostering awareness of preventive approaches to basic health issues. National Security area encourages public discussion of domestic and foreign policy issues.

Science/Engineering

Program: Division of Integrative Biology and Neuroscience
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: JUL 10, 1997
Target Date: proposals may be submitted at any time.
Emphasizes the integration of molecular, subcellular, and cellular biology in understanding organisms in the lab and in nature. Awards are made through three program areas: Physiology and Behavior, Neuroscience, and Developmental Mechanisms. These program areas contain several programs. See individual entries in OFP Grant Search database or contact Division office.

Program: Grants Program
Agency: Turner Foundation, Inc.
Next Deadline: JUL 01, 1997
Supports education and activism activities directed towards preservation of the environment; conservation of natural resources; protection of wildlife; and sound population policies. Program priorities include water and toxins; energy efficiency and renewables; protection of forests and other habitat; and population issues.

Program: Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR)
Agency: U.S. Department of Defense
Next Deadline: JUL 16, 1997
Small high-technology business firms with strong research and development capabilities are encouraged to submit proposals for both military and commercial applications on a wide variety of selected topics.
