During his tenure from 1966 until 1976, Mississippi State's enrollment rose from 8,000 to 12,000. Thirty-five buildings were added or renovated on campus.
In addition, the veterinary program began in 1973 and the School of Architecture, in the building named for the former president, opened in 1974.
Survivors include a daughter, Ginger Jones of Starkville; sons John P. Giles of Atlanta and Richard W. Giles of New York City; and a sister, Nell Ahern of Westwood, Mass.
