The University Patent Committee requires inventors to do a patent search as part of their patent disclosure.
The IBM Patent Server <http://patent.womplex.ibm.com> is recommended as a good website to begin the process. The site contains more than 26 years of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office patent descriptions and 17 years of images.
The site allows searchers to search by inventor, assignee (company name), simple keywords, and patent titles. A typical record gives inventors' names, the assignee, patent numbers, claims, and an abstract.
