Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Fellowships in the Humanities
Agency: American Council of Learned Societies
Next Deadline: SEP 30, 1997
Fellowships provide up to $20,000 for research in the humanities, including philosophy; languages, literature and linguistics; law; archaeology; art history and musicology; history; anthropology; and religion. Proposals with a predominantly humanistic emphasis in economics, geography, political science, psychology, sociology, and the natural sciences will also be considered. Program: Canadian Studies Research Grant Program
Agency: Canadian Embassy
Next Deadline: SEP 30, 1997
Provides assistance to scholars planning to write an article-length manuscript of publishable quality and report their findings in scholarly publications with a view to enhancing the status of Canadian Studies in the U.S. Eligible areas are the social sciences, business, journalism, environment, humanities, law, and trade with a unique relevance to Canada or in the context of the bilateral or North American relationship. Release time stipends and indirect costs are not allowable. Awards are for up to $7,500 for individuals and $15,000 for organizations.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Head Start Research and Demonstration Grants
Agency: Administration for Children and Families
Next Deadline: JUL 18, 1997
Supports research, demonstration and training projects aimed at improving services provided by Head Start programs. In FY 97, ACF is supporting Head Start-university partnerships to translate research into practice and to conduct research on the provision of mental health services within Head Start, Head Start partnerships with HBCUs, and the Head Start Research Scholars Program for the support of doctoral candidates. Refer to the May 19, 1997 Federal Register for program details and application packet.

Program: Grants Program
Agency: BellSouth Foundation
Next Deadline: SEP 01, 1997
Supports the initiation of education reform programs in the following broad topics: developing individual capacity to improve learning; creating environments to improve learning; and promoting partnerships through technology to improve learning. Grants are restricted to institutions in AL, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, and TN.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Grants for Alcohol Research
Agency: Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation
Next Deadline: SEP 15, 1997
Supports research in the following areas of special interest: the effects of the moderate use of alcohol; factors influencing the transition from moderate to excessive drinking; alcohol and youth, traffic accidents, and work related issues; and mechanisms underlying the biomedical effects of alcohol. Funds are available for research project grants, new scientist awards (for career development), project supplement grants, data analysis grants, and pilot/preliminary studies. Program: Research Awards
Agency: American Digestive Health Foundation
Next Deadline: SEP 03, 1997
Supports basic and clinical research and the development of research careers of young investigators in gastroenterology and related fields. Awards fund students, medical residents and professionals at every level of their careers. One program particularly encourages women and minority applicants. About 16 different award types are available, most with either a January 9 or September 10 deadline. In addition, four categories of endoscopic research awards have September 3 or September 10 deadlines. See http://www.gastro.org/research.html.

Science/Engineering

Program: Grant Program
Agency: Fats and Proteins Research Foundation Inc.
Next Deadline: SEP 15, 1997
Supports research concerning the utilization of animal by-products processed by the rendering industry, such as blood meal, meat and bone meal, tallow, hydrolized hair, and feathermeals. Recently funded projects include studies on ecological aspects of the rendering process, and chemical, microbiological and nutritional studies.

Program: Research Professorships
Agency: Mathematical Sciences Research Institute
Next Deadline: SEP 30, 1997
Provides support for midcareer mathematicians to spend a full academic year at the institute conducting individual research. Appointments may be made for a portion of the year. Maximum stipends are $40,000 and normally will not exceed half the applicant's salary. In addition to the stipend, round-trip travel expenses are included. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in 1992 or earlier. Around seven or eight awards will be made in 1998-99. See http://info.msri.org/.
