ARTS/HUMANITIES/INTERNATIONAL

Program: Fund for U.S. Artists at International Festivals/Exhibitions
Agency: Arts International
Next Deadline: SEP 02, 1997
Supports individual U.S. performers or U.S. performing arts groups who have been invited to international festivals, but need additional support, such as travel and per diem expenses. Program is particularly interested in proposals that reflect the cultural diversity of the U.S. and involve events in areas of the world where U.S. work is rarely performed. Priority areas are Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Grants to individuals range from $500 to $2,000, and grants to organizations range from $2,000 to $25,000.

Next Deadline: SEP 15, 1997
Supports graduate theological education; the purchase, restoration, and conservation of Asian art at college and university museums; and education in the field of Asian art.

EDUCATION/HUMAN AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Program: Grants Program
Agency: Kettering Family Foundation
Next Deadline: SEP 01, 1997
Supports projects in the following broad areas: cultural/arts; education; environment; medical/health; and social/human services. General operating costs and research project support are allowable costs. The Foundation holds two formal meetings each year in May and November. Proposals must be submitted prior to March 1 or September 1, respectively, to be considered at upcoming board meetings. In 1996, university grants averaged $25,000.

Agency: General Service Foundation
Next Deadline: SEP 01, 1997
Supports projects dealing with changing social, economic and political conditions. Generally, public education, field research and policy analysis will be given preference over university-based research. Current areas of concern are international peace, population and resources. Particular interests include conflict resolution in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean; population growth and unintended pregnancies; and water management and quality in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. HEALTH/MENTAL HEALTH

Program: Center for the Future of Children Grants
Agency: Packard Foundation (David and Lucile)
Next Deadline: SEP 16, 1997
Grants support research, demonstration, evaluation, and policy analysis projects in the areas of child development, child abuse and neglect, and health. Center-Initiated Projects currently focus on health insurance coverage for young children. Grants usually average $50,000; a few multi-year grants range up to $300,000. Program: Hitchings-Elion Fellowship Award
Agency: Burroughs Wellcome Fund
Next Deadline: SEP 01, 1997
Three-year fellowships support junior scientists (doctorate received no more than 10 years ago) for behavioral or biomedical research in the United Kingdom. The first two years of the fellowship will be spent in collaboration with a British lab; scientists return to the U.S. for the third year of the fellowship. Each fellowship carries an annual $35,000 stipend, $10,500 per year for research expenses, $3,000 for travel, and a $3,500 institutional fee. Internet: http://www.webpress.net/bwfund/career.htm.

SCIENCE/ENGINEERING

Program: Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers Program
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: SEP 12, 1997
Supports materials research at major university-based laboratories in such interdisciplinary and collaborative areas as condensed-matter physics, materials chemistry, and polymers and materials science and engineering. Projects aim to establish research "thrust areas," maintain central research facilities and provide seed money for new initiatives and new investigators. Program now supports activities under former Materials Research Groups Program. Awards of at least $500,000 go to projects of up to five years' duration.

Program: Sloan Basic Research Fellowships
Agency: Sloan (Alfred P.) Foundation
Next Deadline: SEP 15, 1997
Two-year research fellowships of $35,000 are awarded annually to stimulate fundamental research by promising young scholars in physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, neuroscience, and economics. Candidates must be members of a college or university faculty and are nominated by department heads or other senior scholars. Deadline cited is for receipt of nominations. The Foundation currently awards 100 fellowships per year. See http://www.sloan.org.
