Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Fellowships in American History
Agency: American Antiquarian Society
Next Deadline: OCT 14, 1997
Long and short-term residential fellowships support research in early American history using the Society's collections. Stipends range from $950 monthly to $30,000 annually for one to 12 months of study at both pre- and postdoctoral levels (January 15, 1998 deadline). Non-stipend Research Associate positions and joint fellowships with the Newberry Library are also sponsored. A new Mellon Post-Dissertation Fellowship is for longer term (12 months minimum) research by a scholar three years beyond his/her dissertation (October 14, 1997 deadline).

Program: Canadian Studies Faculty Enrichment
Agency: Canadian Embassy
Next Deadline: OCT 31, 1997
Provides faculty with an opportunity to develop courses offered as part of their regular teaching load, or as a special offering to continuing and/or distance education audiences. Courses in the social and human sciences, business, environment, journalism, humanities, law, and trade with a unique relevance to Canada, or in the context of the bilateral or North American relationship, are given priority. New or modified courses must reach a level of at least 33% Canadian content. Faculty may request US $1,500 per month for up to 3 months to cover only direct costs.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Grants Program
Agency: Compton Foundation, Inc.
Next Deadline: OCT 01, 1997
Supports research, public policy studies, graduate and postdoctoral fellowships, public education, and international collaborations in the following topical areas: conflict resolution; population growth; national security; human rights; distribution of technology, resources, energy, and food in developing countries; economic conversion; environmental conservation; community welfare and social justice; and culture and the arts. In all program areas, the Foundation has a special interest in providing support for minorities.

Program: AmeriCorps Education Awards Program
Agency: Corporation for National and Community Service
Next Deadline: OCT 31, 1997
Awards go to IHEs, national nonprofit organizations and state-level agencies to support volunteer community service projects. In return for up to two years of service, volunteers receive an award (for postsecondary or graduate education) of up to $4,725 for full-time service, or $2,362 for part-time service. Program: Research Project Grants
Agency: American Cancer Society
Next Deadline: OCT 15, 1997
Supports up to 3 years of research and clinical investigations related to cancer. Allowable costs include: salary support, technical assistance, special equipment, and supplies. Areas of interest include: cell and developmental biology; immunotherapy and immunology; microbiology; virology; chemotherapy; biochemistry; endocrinology; hematology; carcinogenesis and nutrition; prevention and early detection of cancer; and psychosocial and behavioral research. Awards are made to beginning investigators who are within eight years of their primary research appointments.

Science/Engineering

Program: Institution-Wide Reform of Undergrad. Ed. in Science, Math, Eng. and Technology
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: OCT 14, 1997
Supports ongoing multi-disciplinary research and education efforts to pursue broad-based reform in science, mathematics, engineering and technology (SMET), with the goals of scientific literacy, improved future participation in SMET research and education, technological sophistication in the workforce, and more enthused and prepared SMET pre-college educators. Requested letters of intent are due September 15. Full proposals are due October 14, 1997. See NSF 97-29 for additional information.

Program: ONR: Young Investigator Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Defense
Next Deadline: OCT 01, 1997
Awards of $100,000 per year for three years are made to U.S. citizens who hold tenure track positions at U.S. colleges and universities and have held their Ph.D.s for five years or less, to conduct research within the broad scope of naval interests described in the ONR Broad Agency Announcement. Applications must be submitted through university officials and demonstrate a strong institutional commitment to the researcher as a prospective teacher and to the project.
