Eight fellowships of $18,000 each allow mid-career scholars to pursue full-time research. Priority areas rotate each year among disciplines, including: literary criticism and scholarship; history; anthropology; political science; sociology; philosophy; psychology; religion; archaeology; and fine, applied and performing arts. For 1998-99, creative writing and English, including novels, poetry, playwriting, and essays have been chosen for competition. Deadline cited is for nomination by institution president.

Demonstration: Materials Development
Agency: National Endowment for the Humanities

Supports development of educational materials that will have a significant impact on the way the humanities are taught throughout the country. Materials developed may be print (such as sourcebooks) or electronic (such as a CD-ROM); however, the development of textbooks will not normally be supported. Grants are not expected to reach over $250,000 in total funding, and significant cost-sharing is expected. Materials development support may also be sought under NEH's Teaching with Technology initiative.

Supports K-12 public education initiatives (3/1/95 deadlines): Learning Tomorrow Grants (technology-infused learning for at-risk students); Student Success Grants (programs for underrepresented students); and Road Ahead Grants (student technology training). Additional programs (3/29/96 deadlines) in the areas of global education and faculty development are open to National Education Association members only. Supports projects that encourage reform, innovation, and improvement with a focus on enhancing equality of educational opportunity. Successful projects are comprehensive, action-oriented, risk-taking and responsive to the needs of practitioners; they are usually designed in response to local needs, but have the potential to influence practice elsewhere. Funds basic and applied research in the areas of food, drugs, biologics, medical devices, radiological health, and veterinary medicine through both contracts and grants. Applicants are encouraged to talk to FDA staff before sending in a proposal. A limited number of five-year awards are made for the establishment, enhancement, and operation of major experimental research facilities to conduct research activities in all areas supported by NSF's Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), including information, robotics and intelligent systems, microelectronic information processing, and advanced scientific computing. Proposals are accepted from institutions with Ph.D.-degree granting departments in any one or more of the CISE-research areas.

Supports research on the properties and applications of mathematical structures.
