J.P. Shim, business information systems, was one of 14 who recently participated in the 1997 Japan Study Tour at the invitation of the American Assembly of collegiate Schools of Business. The two-week tour included discussions with top business managers and university leaders, as well as a session with the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan.
The director of the College of Education-based World-Class Teaching Program made a major presentation during August at the annual meeting of the Academy of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Peggy Swoger was invited to discuss the Mississippi mentoring project, which currently involves about two dozen educators in a year-long effort to complete the rigorous national board certification process.
Assistant art professor Anna Chupa was among a limited number of international artists invited to submit their creations for the SIGGRAPH '97 exhibition on computer graphics in Los Angeles. SIGGRAPH is the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics. Chupa exhibited six digital electronic prints.
A number of faculty members and administrators were honored by the Choctaw County Economic Development Foundation for support of the Red Hills Lignite Power Plant Project. Recognized were: Charles Campbell, business and industry; Rodney Foil, agriculture, forestry and veterinary medicine; Joe McGilberry, enterprise and community resource development; Al Myles, community resource development; David Pettry, plant and soil sciences; Melvin Ray, research; Darrel Schmitz, geosciences; Kim Steil, community and resource development; Clayborne Taylor, engineering; and President Donald Zacharias. The university has provided technical and developmental support for the project.
Duncan MacMillan, music education, is one of five nationally recognized panelists who was awarded the Michael Hennagin Prize in Composition at the University of Oklahoma School of Music. The award includes a $5,000 prize and a premiere performance of the winning original work.
