ARTS/HUMANITIES/INTERNATIONAL

Program: General Research Grant Program
Agency: American Philosophical Society
Next Deadline: NOV 01, 1997
Awards support basic postdoctoral research for at least one year in all areas of knowledge. Grants help defray costs such as travel and the connection of the investigator to objects of research. Maximum award levels range from $4,000 to $5,000. Program has January 1, March 1, July 1, and November 1 application deadlines. Written requests for forms must indicate eligibility, specific area of research, and the proposed use of grant funds. Requests must include a self-addressed mailing label.

Program: Postdoctoral Fellowships for New Investigators
Agency: National Humanities Center
Next Deadline: OCT 15, 1997
Supports research in the history of interpretation of national cultural or individual identities. Applicants must have received their doctorate within the last five years. EDUCATION/HUMAN AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Program: Grants Program
Agency: American Honda Foundation
Next Deadline: NOV 01, 1997
Awards are made to non-profit organizations, including colleges and universities, for projects that meet the most pressing needs of youth, as related to science education, environmental education and job training. Emphasis is on broad, innovative and forward-thinking projects with national scope that are dedicated to improving the human condition. Grants during the past year ranged from $10,000 to $100,000.

Program: Research and Innovation (IDEA): Field-Initiated Research
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: OCT 01, 1997
Supports a broad range of research and research-related projects that are initiated by the research community and that focus on the education of and early intervention services for infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities. FY 98 absolute priorities are over-identification and under-identification; inappropriate behavior; improved alignment and compatibility of reforms; and coordination of education with health and social services. HEALTH/MENTAL HEALTH

Program: Injury Prevention and Control: Centers Program
Agency: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Next Deadline: NOV 05, 1997
Supports comprehensive centers on prevention, acute care, or rehabilitation research related to violent behavior and unintentional injuries. Centers must also involve experts in medicine, engineering, epidemiology, law, social sciences, biostatistics, and public health. CDC expects to announce the FY 98 competition in the Federal Register on or around August 29, 1997. See http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/ncipchm.htm for details.

Program: Occupational Safety and Health Small Grants (R03)
Agency: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Next Deadline: NOV 01, 1997
Supports pilot studies to design or test new methods, or to analyze previously collected data, in the area of occupational safety and health. Awards go to beginning investigators or graduate students. Priority areas include: irritant dermatitis; asthma; reproductive abnormalities; hearing loss; infectious diseases; low back disorders; work environment; and traumatic injuries. SCIENCE/ENGINEERING

>Program: Implementation and Development Projects for Women and Girls
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: OCT 01, 1997
Supports major projects to advance women's and girls' scientific, technical and mathematical interests and aptitudes. Projects may involve curricula, model studies, conferences, and outreach activities. Institutional consortia are eligible. Required pre-proposals are due on October 1 (projects costing less than $100,000 per year) and January 2 (projects costing more than $100,000 per year). Program: Division of Materials Research
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: NOV 01, 1997
Target Date: proposals may be submitted at any time.
Supports research on the fundamental understanding of materials, education and training of materials researchers, development of new materials, and the transfer of materials knowledge to technology. Program areas include: metals, ceramics and electronic materials; condensed-matter physics, solid-state chemistry and polymers; National Facilities and Instrumentation; and materials theory. Division also supports Materials Research Groups and Labs. Cited application deadline is for Facilities and Instrumentation Program.
