Campus Sweep needs volunteers

Clean Sweep 97
President Donald Zacharias (l) cleans up the campus with a little help from Brent Funderburk, art, and Cathy Oswalt, university relations.
The first-ever Campus Sweep, scheduled for Oct. 9 and 10, will enlist faculty, staff and students in an effort to improve the campus' appearance.

The Campus Beautification Committee is seeking volunteers to collect trash across campus during the two-day event. Each volunteer will work a two-hour session on a designated section of campus.

"Campus Sweep is designed to improve the litter problem on campus and to instill pride in the way our campus looks," explained committee chair Robyn Remotigue. "With numerous trash teams, we hope not only to remove all litter and cigarette butts from campus, but also to evoke an awareness of this problem throughout the campus community."

For its part, custodial services will extend duties to entrances and exits of buildings and the committee is researching funding for more frequent trash pickups and a custodial liaison for each building.

The sweep will concentrate on central campus, which will be divided into work areas. The first 500 volunteers will receive a free T-shirt.

Rain dates are Oct. 16 and 17.

To fill out a volunteer form, stop by one of the information booths in Allen Hall or the Colvard Union. Those wishing to work a particular area of campus should note the request on the form.
