DAAD supports various programs for the improvement of German area studies programs. Two summer seminars in German studies are offered (3/1 and 3/15 deadlines). A short-term research grant for faculty supports research in contemporary German literature (1/1/97). Sur Place grants (11/1/97 and 5/1/97) support nominated undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students studying contemporary German affairs. Program: Folger Library Long-Term Fellowships

Provides long-term (six to nine-month) fellowship support to scholars pursuing research in fields appropriate to the Folger's collection (British and European literary, cultural, political, religious, and social history of the 15th through 18th centuries). Six or seven fellowships are awarded annually. One or two are Folger-sponsored fellowships (the stipend for these is $2,000 per month). Two are Mellon Foundation-sponsored (the stipends range from $30,000 to $45,000) and the rest are NEH-sponsored (with $30,000 stipends).
Program: Faculty Research Abroad (Fulbright-Hays Act)

Helps institutions strengthen their foreign language and area studies programs by supporting faculty conducting research abroad. Fields of study include economics, geography, modern history, political science, sociology, and rarely taught languages. Overall goal is to strengthen research knowledge on world areas not widely included in American curricula. Projects focusing on Western Europe are not funded. Program: Preparation of Personnel (IDEA): Low Incidence Disabilities

Supports preparation of special educators, related service and early intervention personnel serving children with low incidence disabilities (visual and/or hearing impairment, significant cognitive impairment, or any impairment for which a small number of personnel with highly specialized knowledge are needed). Program: Toxicology Scholar and New
Investigator Awards

Supports a wide range of toxicological research in such areas as basic molecular biology, genetics and physiology; whole animal toxicity; molecular epidemiology; and the interaction of complex biological systems with the environment. Program: Innovative Approaches to Developing New Technologies

Under the Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) mechanism, supports projects to explore new research paradigms in engineering, instrumentation, physics, mathematics, or computer science as applied to biomedical research. Research must be unusually imaginative with potential to lead to a significant expansion of biomedical research horizons. Direct costs are limited to $75,000 per year for up to two years. Program: Instrumentation for Materials Research Program
Agency: National Science Foundation

Supports the purchase of major shared-use instruments needed for materials research and the development of new instruments that extend current measurement capabilities. Eligible institutions should have formally constituted research programs in the following areas: low temperature physics, solid state physics, solid state chemistry, condensed matter theory, metallurgy, polymers, and ceramics and electronic materials. This program also provides support for purchase of closed-cycle helium liquefaction systems.
Program: Collaborative Research Grants
Agency: North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)

Supports joint projects carried out between research teams in different NATO countries in life sciences, physical and mathematical sciences, behavioral and social sciences, chemistry, geosciences, and applied sciences. Funds cover travel and living expenses. Projects involving the countries of Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States are eligible in the areas of disarmament technologies, the environment, high technology, and human resources/technology policy.
