Lyceum Series announces new season

The Mississippi State Lyceum Series opens Oct. 14 with a team of modern dancers who spice performances with off-the-wall props and humor.

The "Second Hand Dance Company" marks the first of four programs in the 1997-98 Lyceum Series.

The company's three dancers draw from their varied backgrounds in athletics, theater, ballet, and the martial arts to produce witty, acrobatic performances for audiences around the world. They demonstrate their implicit trust in each other's abilities by constantly testing their strengths through creative movements and physically demanding poses.

Other Lyceum programs include:

• The "St. Louis Brass Quintet" will bring the sounds of Ellington/Strayhorn, Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Stephen Foster to campus on Feb. 24, 1998.

• "New Arts Six," an ensemble of women devoted to the preservation of African-American music, poetry and literature, will perform "A Joyful Noise" March 24.

• John Amos, best known for his portrayal of the older Kunta Kinte in the television mini-series "Roots," will wrap up the 1997-98 season with an April 23 performance. In his one-man play, "Halley's Comet," Amos shares the tales of an 87-year-old man who is visited by the comet for the second time in his life.

All performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Hall auditorium.

Tickets for individual performances are $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens (by request) and $3 for children 3-12. Individual tickets are available at the door only.
