Provides college faculty with opportunities for intensive study of texts, historical periods, ideas, and issues central to undergraduate teaching in the humanities. Institutes are sponsored by higher education institutions, museums, libraries, and professional organizations and are under the direction of a recognized group of scholars. Grants cover weekly stipends, travel, room, and board. Prospective applicants should contact the directors of the institutes in which they are interested. Program: Curatorial and Historic Preservation Programs
Agency: Warhol (Andy) Foundation for the Visual Arts

Grants are made on a project basis to curatorial programs at museums, artists' organizations, and other cultural institutions to assist in the innovative and scholarly presentation of contemporary visual arts. Projects may include exhibitions, catalogues and other organizational activities. Also supports the creation of new work through regranting initiatives and artist-in-residence programs. Choreography and the performing arts are occasionally funded if related to the visual arts. Send two or three-page letter describing project.

Supports basic, applied, and policy-relevant research on the nonprofit sector in the U.S. through research grants (up to $50,000), large scale research (up to $100,000), and doctoral dissertation research grants (up to $20,000). Principal areas of interest are democracy; role of nonprofits; advocacy; philanthropy; governance; public accountability; financial resources; nonprofit workforce; and international dimensions. Program: 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Education

Provides grants to rural and inner-city public schools, or consortia of those schools, for projects that benefit the educational, health, social service, cultural and recreational needs of the community. The priority is to provide a safe and drug-free academic learning center for early adolescents and middle school students beyond regular school hours. An LEA may submit a consortium application on behalf of several schools. Applications will be made available December 16, 1997.
Program: Occupational Safety and Health Small Grants (R03)

Supports pilot studies to design or test new methods, or to analyze previously collected data, in the area of occupational safety and health. Awards go to beginning investigators or graduate students. Priority areas include: irritant dermatitis; asthma; reproductive abnormalities; hearing loss; infectious diseases; low back disorders; work environment; and traumatic injuries. Supports the prevention of birth defects through studies of basic biological processes governing development, genetics, clinical studies, studies of reproductive health, environmental toxicology, and social and behavioral factors. Supports research concerning the utilization of animal by-products processed by the rendering industry, such as blood meal, meat and bone meal, tallow, hydrolized hair, and feathermeals. Supports development of materials and programs for science, mathematics and technology learning outside the formal education system. Focal areas are such media as television, radio and print, science and natural history museums, science-technology centers, zoos, parks, aquaria, botanical gardens and arboreta, nature centers, and other youth-service organizations. Required pre-proposals are due August 1 March and 1, with full proposals due June 1 and November 15. Collaborations linking organizations are encouraged.
