Human subject research must be approved

University policies and federal regulations require that all research involving human subjects-both on and off campus-be reviewed and approved by a university committee.

Prior to initiating the research, the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research (IRB) must review proposals of faculty, staff and students

Human subjects research can include the following: teaching methods, effects of curriculum, educational testing, surveys, interviews, observation of public behavior, and existing data/records (depending on the use of identifiable links to the subjects).

Failure to comply with the federal regulations can result in a loss of all federal monies for the university and can seriously compromise the validity of individual research projects.

The IRB application can be accessed from the Sponsored Programs Administration home page located at <www.msstate.edu/Dept/SPA/spa.html>. Copies may also be acquired at 314 Bowen Hall.

For questions regarding research involving human subjects, please contact Robyn Remotigue at 325-3994 or robyn@spa.msstate.edu.
