Judges sought for science fair at MSU

Scores of elementary and high school students from 16 eastern and central counties are expected to take part March 20 and 27 in the Region 5 Science and Engineering Fair at Mississippi State.

Because of anticipated construction in Humphrey Coliseum, this year's project displays will be divided between the McCarthy Gym on Creelman Street and the Newell-Grissom Building on Bully Boulevard. As a result of the location changes, additional volunteer judges are needed to maintain the day-long schedule. The College of Engineering's Office of Engineering and Sciences Education and Outreach, sponsor of the annual event, currently is seeking a minimum of 125 judges for each day's competition.

Grades 1-6 will be judged on the 20th; grades 7-12, on the 27th. Projects will be set up during the morning, with judging to begin at 12:45 p.m. Award ceremonies for both competitive levels get under way at 5 p.m.

On the 20th, students in grades 1-3 will display their projects in McCarthy, while those in grades 4-6 will be featured in Newell-Grissom. On the 27th, grades 7-8 will be in Newell-Grisson and grades 9-12 will set up in McCarthy.

The Region V competition, which last year had more than 1,100 entries, includes the counties of Attala, Clay, Choctaw, Kemper, Lauderdale, Leake, Lowndes, Madison, Montgomery, Neshoba, Newton, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Scott, Webster, and Winston.
