

Program: The Congressional Research Grants Program

Supports original research on congressional leadership and the United States Congress. Topics can include, but are not limited to: the effects of external factors and institutional conditions on congressional leadership; resources and techniques used by leaders; and the prospects for change or continuity in the patterns of leadership. This program was developed to support work intended for publication or for teaching or policy making. Most grants fund up to one year of study at levels up to $3,000.
Program: Creation and Presentation
Agency: National Endowment for the Arts
Next Deadline: APR 03, 1998
Supports the creation of new work and the presentation of new and existing works of any culture, period, or discipline. Priority will be given to projects that are of national, regional, or field-wide significance, including unique local projects that are likely to serve as models for a field. Program: Managing Information with Rural America (MIRA)
Agency: Kellogg (W.K.) Foundation
Next Deadline: APR 15, 1998
MIRA is a major four-year initiative of Kellogg's Food Systems and Rural Development Program area designed to assist rural communities in using information systems and technologies to enhance community development. Five community clusters comprised of six to ten teams per cluster were selected (deadline 12/30/97). There will be ten to fifteen community support organizations per cluster (deadline 4/15/98) and at least one policy support organization chosen to work with each cluster (deadline 11/30/97). Program: Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: FEB 17, 1998
Provides fellowships to students of superior ability to pursue doctoral level or MFA graduate study in the arts, humanities or social sciences. Fellows are selected by a national board on the basis of demonstrated achievement and exceptional promise. Each fellow's institution receives a cost of instruction payment in lieu of tuition. Program: Research Project Grants
Agency: American Cancer Society
Next Deadline: APR 01, 1998
Supports research and clinical investigations related to cancer with grants up to $150,000 for 2 to 5 years. Allowable costs include: salary support, technical assistance, special equipment, and supplies. Areas of interest include: cell and developmental biology; immunology; microbiology; virology; chemotherapy; biochemistry; endocrinology; hematology; carcinogenesis and nutrition; prevention and early detection of cancer; and behavioral research. Awards are made to beginning investigators.
Program: Injury Prevention and Control: Research Grants
Agency: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Next Deadline: FEB 25, 1998
Supports a wide range of health professionals' research on injury prevention and control. In FY 98 $1.8 million is available to fund six to eight research projects addressing primary prevention of unintentional injuries (home and leisure; and motor vehicle related injuries), and $9 million is available to support three to five projects addressing biomechanics. Program: NAS-NRC Collaboration in Basic Science and Engineering Program (COBASE)
Agency: National Research Council
Next Deadline: APR 06, 1998
Supports two types of activities: short-term exchanges of two weeks allow scientists of the U.S./former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe to prepare projects for in-depth research; and long-term exchanges of one to six months allow those scientists to carry out their extended research projects. Total stipends for short-term exchanges range in size from $2,000 to $2,500, and long-term total stipends range from $3,000 to $15,300. The 7/10/98 deadline is for long-term grants , and the program carries short-term grant deadlines of 4/6/98 and 8/17/98 and 12/29/97.
Program: Advanced Technological Education
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: APR 15, 1998
Supports projects that improve advanced technological education at national and regional levels through curriculum development and program improvement at undergraduate and secondary school levels, especially for technicians' education in the high performance workplace. Curricular projects include those designing and implementing new curricula, courses, labs and instructional materials, while program improvement includes teacher and faculty development and academic support. Cited deadline is for required preproposals. Invited proposals are due October 15. See NSF 97-29.
