National engineering society honors Halpin

Dr. S. Mark Halpin is the 1997 Outstanding Young Member of a national engineering association.

The assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering is the first MSU faculty member to receive the honor of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Industrial Application Society. The annual award recognizes "outstanding contributions" through the authorship of technical papers, chapter leadership and committee work and other professional activities.

IEEE is the world's largest technical society, with more than 320,000 members in nearly 150 countries. Its Industrial Application Society is an international leader in advancing technology and disseminating technical information in the field.

Halpin's research and teaching involve power system modeling and analysis and power quality. Active in society programs related to power systems engineering research, development and education, he currently chairs two major committees and has served as secretary of another.

The Sandersville, Ga., native also has authored or co-authored more than 50 research papers, as well as contributed to IEEE publications on standards for electric power systems.

Halpin holds bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Auburn University.
